Barents Forest Forum 2019

The Brents / Euro-Arctic Region Forest Forum on the theme “The Barents region in a biobased future” was held in the city of Umea (Sweden) on October 15-17, 2019. The Barents Forest Forum is a cooperation platform for forest sector stakeholders in the Barents region and is organized by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Swedish Forestry Agency as one of the key events during the Swedish chairmanship in the Barents Euro-Artic Council.

Over the course of three days, participants from industry, forest stakeholders, policy, research and development, and education discussed the forest in a biobased future in Northern Europe, with a particular focus on the Barents region.

The conference commenced with a workshop focused on labor supply, equal opportunities and education. The conference continued with high-level practice-oriented presentations with focus on examples from Finland, Norway, Russia and Sweden. The focus of the conference is on the multiple-functions of forests in future bioeconomy (e.g., society’s mitigation and adaptation to climate change, biobased products, and forest-based innovations). The last day of the event focus on practical demonstrations in forest-related excursions. A delegation of the Federal Forestry Agency of the Russian Federation took part in the work of the Forest Forum, which included representatives of the All-Russian Research Institute of Forestry and Forestry Mechanization (VNIILM), the Northern Research Institute of Forestry (SevNIIILH) and the St. Petersburg Forestry Research Institute (SPbNIIILH). Natalia Demidova made presentation on the theme “On the role of research activities to solve the problems of forest reproduction, forestry intensification and development of forest biotechnologies”.
