24.09.2013

The training courses in the field of intensive forest management, organized by the Finnish Forest Research Institute (METLA) and the Petrozavodsk State University in the frame of the international project "Novel cross-border solutions for intensification of forestry and increasing energy wood use", performed in accordance with a program of Neighbourhood and Partnership KARELIA ENPI CBC was hold in Joensuu from 16 to 20 of September 2013. The teachers and students of Petrozavodsk State University, Moscow State Forest University, researchers of Karelian Research Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences, engineers of LLC "Metsä Forest Podporozhe", LLC Ladenso and other forestry experts attended the event. Svetlana Bobushkina, junior researcher of the Northern Research Institute of Forestry, has participated in the courses.

The participants received basic information about forestry in Finland, which is based on the concept of "sustainability". We met with the Finnish approaches to forest inventory, forest planning, as well as with the full cycle of intensive forest growing, currently practiced in the country. Issues of Forestry Economics (economic effect of thinning, subsidies in Finland, etc.), new technologies and software were discussed. The problems of forest management intensification in Russia were identified.

In addition to theoretical studies, the trips to the forest were organized: private nursery for growing containerized seedlings, land for reforestation (soil preparation and quality of planting material). Participants visited the forest areas where they were introduced with pre-commercial and commercial thinning with appropriate machinery and equipment.

Finnish colleagues have demonstrated the planning of thinning by a computer program Motti Karelia.

According to the results of courses the participants received certificates of advanced training.
