14.12.2012

An informal Nordic – Russian meeting “Conservation of Boreal Forests in the Barents Region: Further efforts to protect large, pristine old growth forests in NW Russia” was organized by Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management and Bioforsk (Norway) in St. Petersburg, 11th - 12th December 2012.

The seminar was attended by representatives from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. O.A. Lemeshko (Roslesinforg) and N.A. Demidova (FBU "SevNIILH") participated in the meeting from Federal Forest Agency of the RF.

The results of former Nordic – Russian cooperation on forest conservation in NW Russia in the period 1998 – 2010 were presented. The next steps and intensification of efforts of biodiversity conservation in the last intact forests in the Barents Region were discussed. A main base for these efforts will be continued international cooperation under the bilateral environmental agreements between Norway – Russia, Finland – Russia, and Sweden – Russia. Also cooperation under the Barents Euro Arctic Council is highly relevant, as well as efforts to meeting obligations under other international agreements and conventions, especially the Convention on Biological Diversity.
