Seminar FAO “State of Forest Genetic Resources in the Central Asia Region”

03.09.2012

27-29.08. 2012. Seminar FAO “State of Forest Genetic Resources in the Central Asia Region” took place in Dushanbe (Tadjikistan). N. Demidova took part in the seminar.

The urgency of conserving and sustainably utilizing FGR was recognized by the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) of FAO, which requested FAO that a first ever report on The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources (SOW-FGR), be prepared and presented to the Commission in 2013.

Country reports on FGR are the primary source of data and information for the preparation of SOW-FGR. The elaboration of Country Reports is expected to be a strategic planning exercise to engage a wide range of stakeholders in the assessment of needs required to achieve the conservation and sustainable use of forest genetic resources and a tool to shape national and regional strategies and programs.

A Regional Training Workshop was organized in Izmit (Turkey), on 19-22 September 2011, to assist National Focal Points (NFPs) of the Central Asia Region in planning the preparation of country reports following guidelines prepared by FAO. Despite this capacity building by FAO, Central Asian countries requested further assistance and guidance from FAO for the preparation of national reports of FGR. Through a regional TCP Facility project, Central Asian countries improved their capacity in preparing country reports to assess and monitor the status of their forest genetic resources on a regular basis.

The objectives of the regional workshop:

(i) to share findings and recommendations of country reports for the SoW-FGR;

(ii) to review and finalize a regional synthesis report including needs, priorities for action at regional and global levels, and options for follow-up to the SoW-FGR.

N. Demidova has presented two presentations:

  • Status of the National Report of the Russian Federation and
  • Draft of the regional synthesis report based on the country reports from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan).

On the last day of the seminar the State Institution of forestry and hunting organized field trip to 2 forest nurseries, where the participants got acquainted with the forest management in the Republic of Tajikistan.
